Cheap does not mean low quality. We have repeatedly encountered the situation: the customer is looking forcheap names of adsorbents products, but receives either outdated activated carbons without certificates, or imported gels for 12,000 ₽/kg without technical support. In real water, air and industrial wastewater treatment projects, price is important - but only if it does not sacrifice the reproducibility of the result. Over the past five years, we have tested 47 types of adsorbents in laboratory and field conditions: from silica gels to modified zeolites. Below is what works in practice, not in the catalogue.

What's really cheap - and why

The word “cheap” in chemical cleaning is deceptive. Activated carbon BAU-L costs 320 ₽/kg - cheaper than most analogues. But its specific surface area is 850 m²/g, and at pH > 8.5 the efficiency drops by 40%. This means you pay less per unit of mass, but spend more on reloading filters. Real savings lie in the balance of cost, resource and stability. For example, our own adsorbent YZ-502 (modified iron oxide on a silica matrix) costs 680 RUR/kg. It removes up to 0.005 mg/L of arsenic at 1.2 g/L - twice as long as standard FeOOH. Here, “cheap” is not the price on the label, but the cost of purifying 1 m³ of water.

We tested three groups of products:

  • Classic adsorbents: activated carbon (BAU-A, SKT-3), zeolites (Na-P1, clinoptilolite), silica gels (KSM-1, KSM-5). Price - from 290 to 950 ₽/kg. Suitable for organics and ammonia, but weak against heavy metals without prior oxidation.
  • Specialized Composites: iron-containing gels (YZ-502), aluminum-zinc-containing sorbents (YZ-701), amino-grafted resins (YZ-305). Price - from 620 to 1,450 rubles/kg. Work at low pH, retain As, Pb, Cd even in the presence of phosphates.
  • Activator reagents: hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, low-power ozonizers. Not adsorbents per se, but they make their use cheaper - for example, oxidation of As(III) → As(V) before feeding to YZ-502 reduces sorbent consumption by 65%.

Where are the pitfalls hidden?

Some people think: “If the adsorbent is powdery and black, it will do.” This is a dangerous misconception. We observed two typical failures:

Firstly, replacing granular coal with powder coal without calculating hydraulic resistance. In one project in Tyumen, the filter clogged within 72 hours: powder leaked through the distribution grid, causing a pumping station failure. Secondly, ignoring the ionic strength of the medium. YZ-701 shows 99% lead removal in the distillate, but in wastewater with a total salinity of 8 g/l, the efficiency drops to 63%. We always require a water sample - not according to GOST, but according to the actual composition: Ca²⁺, SO₄²⁻, Cl⁻, ORP, pH.

One more point: expiration date. BAU-A coal can be stored for 2 years in sealed packaging. But the same YZ-502 loses 15% of activity after 6 months at humidity > 60%. We supply it in aluminum foil with a moisture indicator - this is not marketing, but a necessity.

How to choose - by task, not by price tag

We have a clear selection algorithm, tested in more than 120 projects:

  1. Identifying the pollutant: As, Cr(VI), phenol, methanol, ammonia? Each has its own adsorption mechanism: chelation, ion exchange, physical adsorption.
  2. Analyzing the matrix: water or air? pH 3.2 or 10.5? Are there oils, surfactants, sulfides? This decides whether the YZ-305 can be used or whether a pre-filter is needed.
  3. We consider the life cycle: sorbent cost + replacement + disposal + downtime. For example, YZ-502 is 110% more expensive than coal, but its service life is 3.2 times longer, and disposal is easier - it is not classified as hazardous waste of class 1-2.

The future is in controlled accessibility

Cheap is not a temporary promotion. This is the result of optimization of production, logistics and customer feedback.
