Why a butterfly valve and not a diaphragm or annular valve?

In 2022, we tested three types of explosion protection devices on a polymer powder transport line (temperature up to +95°C, response pressure 0.12 bar). The diaphragm valves failed during the first cycle due to abrasive wear and static charge accumulation. The ring structures showed an unstable response pressure: ±18% of the declared value. And the butterfly valve with a spring mechanism and adjustable opening torque went through 147 cycles without deviation. Its advantage is in its geometry: the disk rotates around its axis and does not tear or deform. This gives a predictable response even with frequent impulses. We use models with bore diameters from DN150 to DN600. For DN300, the standard response pressure is 0.08–0.15 bar, accuracy ±3%. This stability is not possible without tight mechanical calibration and a heat-resistant Viton® fluoroelastomer seal.

“Cheap” is not a reduction in reliability, but a rejection of unnecessary things

Some customers believe: “If the price is lower than the market average, it means the material is weaker.” But we see the opposite. In 2023, one of our customers compared two valves with the same parameters: the competitor had an anodized aluminum body, and we had a cast aluminum alloy ADC12 with a reinforced fin design. Result? When tested for impact load (GOST R ISO 14122-3), our housing withstood 2.3 times more cycles before microcracks appeared. Why? We identify three main reasons for premature failure:

• Incorrect axle installation: if the valve shaft is not aligned with the pipe axis with an accuracy of 0.3 mm, the disc becomes misaligned and the seal wears unevenly;
• No thermal expansion compensation: when operating above +80°C, a gap between the flanges of at least 8 mm is required - otherwise the housing will be deformed;
• Ignoring Flow Direction: Single-sided butterfly valve. The "reverse" setting reduces the actuation pressure by 35-40% and makes the actuation uncontrollable.
