A cheap butterfly valve for water is not a sign of compromise. This is the result of accurately calculating hydraulic loads, choosing the optimal disc thickness and eliminating redundant features in projects where they are not needed. We have seen customers lose 30-40% of their valve budget simply because they were looking for “the most reliable” rather than “reliable *for this line*”. In real water supply and wastewater systems in Chengdu, Kazan and Yekaterinburg, we replaced outdated wedge valves with butterfly valves with pressure PN10 and diameter DN200–DN600 - and reduced the unit cost by 22–37% without loss of service life.
The key mistake when choosing is to confuse price with design. A butterfly valve for water becomes cheap not due to cheap materials, but due to three solutions: firstly, the use of a cast body made of SCh20 cast iron instead of malleable cast iron - the strength is sufficient for pressure up to 1.0 MPa, and the weight and cost are 18% lower. Secondly, the use of an AISI 304 stainless steel disc with a thickness of 8 mm (not 12 mm) has been tested in 14 projects: at flow speeds of up to 3 m/s and pH 6.5–8.5, corrosion does not exceed 0.012 mm/year. Thirdly, abandonment of the pneumatic drive where manual control with a gearbox is sufficient. We recorded the average service life of such valves - 12 years with a weekly “open/close” cycle.
Important: it works cheaply only if the conditions are met. If the water contains abrasive particles above 50 mg/l or the temperature exceeds +60 °C, the savings will result in premature wear of the seal. We always require our clients to analyze the composition of the medium - otherwise even the highest quality valve will fail after 18 months.
The most common misconception is: “the heavier the shutter, the more reliable it is.” In practice, an overloaded housing creates excess stress in the flange connection. We observed the destruction of gaskets in systems with a pressure of 0.4 MPa precisely because of the excessive mass of the reinforcement. A lightweight but properly designed bolt lasts longer.
Savings are possible on three levels - and each requires a technical solution, not a trade discount. Firstly, on the type of connection: flanged valves with dimensions in accordance with GOST 33259-2015 are 15% cheaper than with welding, but they can only be installed with access to the flanges from both sides. Secondly, on the seal material: NBR is suitable for cold water up to +50 °C and costs 28% less than EPDM. Thirdly, on the drive version: a manual gearbox type ZL-200 provides a torque of 200 Nm and costs 1/5 the cost of a pneumatic drive if the number of cycles does not exceed 5 per day.
You can't skimp on certification. We refused to supply one project in Tyumen when the client suggested using a valve without a declaration of conformity with TR TS 032/2013. After 7 months of operation, the housing ruptured due to water hammer - not due to pressure, but due to lack of control of the impact strength of the material.
Before ordering a cheap butterfly valve for water, take three steps. First, request a hydraulic test report: pressure must be at least 1.5×PN, hold for 5 minutes without dripping. Secondly, ask for a photo of the cut of the disc: the boundary between steel and rubber should be clear, without bubbles or delaminations. Thirdly, check the availability of spare o-rings in the kit - their presence reduces downtime during maintenance by 65%.
Chengdu Yizhi Technology Co., Ltd. has been designing such valves since 2013, focusing on the balance of cost, service life and operating conditions. The company's authorized capital is 120 million yuan, but what is more important for us is not the amount, but how many projects we have closed without complaints: 217 by 2024. Cheap butterfly valve for water - this is not the price on the website. This solution, which does not require modifications on site, does not raise questions from Rostekhnadzor inspectors and does not break down at the first water hammer. Such products exist. You just need to be able to distinguish them.
