Cheap production of oxygen by adsorption at variable pressure is not a marketing slogan, but a technical reality for factories, clinics and laboratories in Russia and the CIS. We have launched 17 such installations since 2019: from a small medical station at 5 m³/h to an industrial module at 300 m³/h. In each case, the key requirement of the customer was one thing -reduce the cost of oxygen without losing the stability of purity and pressure. This is where the PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) method wins over cryogenic solutions and membrane systems.
Cryogenic plants consume 0.8–1.2 kWh per 1 m³ O₂ with a purity of 99.5%. Membrane ones are cheaper to buy, but provide only 40–45% oxygen and drop at a load above 80%. PSA systems work differently: two adsorbers with 13X zeolite are switched every 60-120 seconds. One captures nitrogen, the other is regenerated by atmospheric air. Energy consumption - from 0.35 kWh/m³ (at 93% purity, 3 bar) to 0.52 kWh/m³ (at 99.2%, 5 bar). We saw how a client from Kazan reduced oxygen costs by 2.3 times by replacing the cylinder supply with a PSA station with a capacity of 25 m³/h.
The main advantage is predictable operation. There are no “floating” parameters: purity remains within the range of ±0.3%, pressure within ±0.1 bar. This is critical for aluminum welding, oxidation reactions in pharmaceuticals and mechanical ventilation. We conducted tests ourselves: with a sharp change in ambient temperature from +5°C to +35°C, the output concentration dropped by only 0.17%. The reason is the fine tuning of the control valves and the compensation algorithm in the Siemens S7-1200 PLC.
Some people think: “I bought it, connected it, it works.” But we encountered three common failures. The first is contamination of the adsorbent with oil from the compressor. One customer in Yekaterinburg used a piston compressor without an oil separator. After 4 months, purity dropped from 93% to 86%, the adsorber had to be completely replaced. The solution is an oil-free screw compressor or the mandatory ISO 8573-1 Class 0 filter.
The second is air humidity. At relative humidity above 80%, zeolite loses capacity. In Ufa, we added a chiller-dryer with a dew point of -20°C and automatic drainage. The third is the wrong size selection. A setting of 10 m³/h will not cover the peak load of 14 m³/h even for a minute. We always build a consumption schedule: minimum/maximum/average per day. This is the only way to select the volume of adsorbers and compressor power.
The service life of zeolite is 8–10 years if the conditions are met. We document every case: not one of our clients has changed the adsorbent before 7 years.
The installation price is only 35-45% of the total cost of ownership. The rest is electricity, maintenance, filter replacement, downtime. Let's take an example: station at 50 m³/h, purity 93%, pressure 4 bar.
Compare with cylinders: 40 l × 150 atm = 6 m³. The price of the cylinder is from 2,800 rubles. Net cost - 467 rubles/m³. Even taking into account the depreciation of the PSA station over 3 years, the savings are obvious. We help clients make such calculations based on their specific conditions: tariff, work schedule, cleanliness requirements.
Chengdu Yizhi Technology Co., Ltd. is a design institute established in 2013 by a subsidiary of Chengdu Huaxi Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. The registered capital is 120 million yuan. But what is more important for us is not the numbers, but what we do: we design PSA systems for Russian conditions - from Arkhangelsk to Astrakhan. We have our own test benches where we test adsorbents at humidity levels up to 95%, at temperatures from –30°C to +45°C. We don't sell "the box". We provide a solution: complete set, design drawings, monitoring software, personnel training. On the websiteyzkjhx.ruTechnical data sheets, connection diagrams and videos from actual launches are available.
Cheap oxygen production by pressure swing adsorption product is not the minimum price for equipment. This is the optimal balance between capital costs, operating costs and reliability. This is an understanding of where you can save money - and where you can’t take risks. This is an experience that does not fit into a catalog, but is felt in every valve configured and every project launched.
