When they talk about Chinese PSA plants for oxygen production, many people immediately think about the low price and dubious quality. But the reality, at least over the last 5-7 years, has changed a lot. I myself was skeptical about this segment for a long time, until I had to deal in detail with a project for a Russian company in 2018. That’s when I realized that trends had gone far beyond the stereotypes.

From stereotypes to specifics: how quality has changed

Previously, the main headache was the components. Valves that jammed after six months of operation, zeolite molecular sieves with unpredictable capacity, problems with automation. Now the situation is different. Large Chinese manufacturers, especially those working for the domestic market and for export to Southeast Asia, have long switched to using high-quality imported components or have learned to make their own completely reliable analogues.

A striking example is pneumatic automatic valves. Previously, they installed anything, but now many assemblers of PSA systems use valves from well-known Taiwanese or even their own brands, which show a service life of 2-3 million cycles. This is already a level sufficient for most industrial applications that do not require extreme reliability as in medicine. The key word here isindustrial applications. For them, Chinese installations have become a very competitive option.

But there is a nuance that is often missed when choosing. The quality of the installation itself greatly depends on whether the manufacturer is simply an assembler or has his own engineering competencies. Those who design process circuits for specific tasks (say, different outlet pressures or special dew point requirements), rather than simply packaging standard modules, produce a completely different product. This is where the difference between companies is visible.

Market and growth drivers: not only price

Of course, cost is the main driver. The price of a Chinese PSA-oxygen unit can be 30-50% lower than a European equivalent of comparable performance. But now buyers are no longer looking only at the price tag. An important factor was configuration flexibility and delivery speed. European manufacturers often work on a long cycle, while Chinese ones can assemble and ship a turnkey complex in 3-4 months.

The main consumption sectors in Russia and the CIS now are metallurgy (blast enrichment), wastewater treatment, glass production, fisheries and small industries that require oxygen for oxidation processes. It is interesting to see how the demand for medium power plants (100-500 Nm3/h) is growing. This is a niche where large air separation stations are ineffective and imported PSA systems are too expensive.

Another trend is the request for energy efficiency. Previously, everything depended on it just working. Now customers are asking about specific energy consumption per cubic meter of oxygen. Leading Chinese engineering companies are already actively working to optimize adsorption cycles and use more efficient screw compressors. This is no longer a primitive technique.

Case Study: When Things Didn't Go According to Plan

I would like to give an example that is not ideal, but instructive. In 2020, we participated in the launch of a Chinese PSA unit with a capacity of 300 Nm3/h for one plant in Siberia. The manufacturer was new, little known. The main mistake was not checking the incoming air conditions in detail. The installation was designed for standard conditions, but at the site in winter the temperature dropped to -45°C, and the air drying system going to the zeolites could not cope. The condensate froze, got into the adsorbers, and the sieves were poisoned.

We had to modify it on site - install an additional regenerative dryer in front of the PSA unit. The project turned out to be more expensive and with delays. What awaits the market in the coming years?

My forecast is further segmentation. Frankly budget lines will appear for simple tasks (for example, for fisheries, where the requirements are minimal). And in parallel, the segment of high-quality, engineering-advanced systems for serious industry will be strengthened. In the second segment, Chinese players will increasingly squeeze the Europeans.

Another trend is digitalization. Remote monitoring of plant parameters, predictive analytics for screen replacement, automatic cycle adjustment. This is still rare, but the request is already being formed. Whoever is the first Chinese manufacturer to offer a convenient and working solution in this field will capture a significant share of the premium segment.

Finally, logistics and service. Now the main barrier is customer concerns about post-warranty service and repairs. Companies that can organize prompt supplies of spare parts and have trained service engineers in the region will receive a huge advantage. There are still problems with this, but individual players, including the mentioned Chengdu Yizhi Technology, are already working on creating service networks in the CIS countries.

Final Considerations: What to Look for When Choosing

So, to summarize. Chinese PSA oxygen is no longer a lottery, but a conscious choice for many industrial applications. When choosing a supplier, you need to look deeper: is it just assembly or does it have its own engineering? Are there any references in similar industries? How do they spendtechnological calculation– are detailed conditions requested from the site?

Be sure to request a list of main components (compressor, valves, control system) and check the manufacturers. The contract must clearly state warranty obligations, acceptance conditions and the procedure for resolving disputes. And the main thing is to realistically assess your needs. They often overpay for excess purity of oxygen, which is simply not needed in a particular process.

The market is moving towards maturity. And those who learn to navigate it, sifting out just assemblers from technology partners, will be able to get a very favorable price-quality ratio for their projects. And this, ultimately, is the main trend.
